TransAsia plane crashes in Taiwan river, killing at least nine people

A TransAsia Airways flight carrying 58 passengers and crew from Taiwan to southeastern China crashed into the Keelung river near Taipei on Wednesday morning, killing at least nine people and injuring dozens, according to local media reports.
The flight, TransAsia GE 235 from Taipei to the Kinmen islands, a small archipelago near the Chinese mainland, crashed at 10.45am local time, according to Taiwan’s aviation council — about three minutes after takeoff. Astonishing dash-cam videos posted online showed the plane in its final airborne moments, with its wings nearly vertical over a highway and clipping a taxi cab and a guardrail with its left wing.
The plane carried 51 adults, 2 children, and 5 crew members, according to the Singaporean broadcaster Channel NewsAsia. At least 27 people have been rescued from the plane’s wreckage; scores have been sent to hospital, and the death toll has been steadily rising throughout the day. At least 31 people are still unaccounted for.
The driver of the clipped taxi cab “has been sent to a local hospital,” an assistant to the Crown Taxi Company’s general manager who identified himself as Mr. Yang, told the Guardian. “He has head injury and concussion, but all of his vital signs are stable.” Yang added that the company planned to raise the topic of compensation with TransAsia Airways at a later date.
“Several fire engines, ambulances, water craft and almost 170 rescue staff have been dispatched,” said a press release by the Taiwanese Central Disaster Response Centre. Local TV stations continue to broadcast live footage of rescue workers in life vests and yellow helmets surrounding the plane’s partially-submerged fuselage in inflatable rafts.
The aviation news site AirlineReporter reported that the flight’s pilot issued a distress signal when the plane’s engines flamed out only a few minutes after takeoff. The aircraft was 10 months old at the time of the crash, the site reported.
“Weather conditions were good and the pilot had 14,000 hours of flying hours and the co-pilot 4,000 hours,” Lin Zhiming, a representative from Taiwan’s Civil Aviation Authority, told reporters on Wednesday afternoon.
