Broome’s working pearl farm open to the public. Discover the Kimberley coast with Australia’s pearling pioneers. 200km/2.5hrs north of Broome.

Tucked away at the tip of the Dampier Peninsula north of Broome, Cygnet Bay offers a few surprises to travellers. At the end of an unsealed driveway lies a small and vibrant community, established over 50 years ago by the Brown family as the land base for Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm. The Brown family are true pioneers of the West Australian cultured pearl industry, introducing the first non lugger to the Broome pearling fleet and the first 'hookah' divers to the industry. Lyndon Brown was also the first non-Japanese person to successfully master the art and science of the cultured Australian pearl. Today, Cygnet Bay is one of only three remaining commercial pearl farms in WA, and is in its third generation of ownership and operation by the Brown family. Our pearling crew works year round to ensure the best conditions for our Pinctada Maxima shell, culminating in our annual pearl harvest. Of the countless beautiful Broome pearls harvested over the past 50 years, one in particular stands out - the world's largest fine quality round pearl, measuring in at 22.24mm in diameter and harvested at Cygnet Bay in 2004. This is a once in a lifetime achievement for a pearl farmer, and the pearl remains in the Brown family's private collection, on display in the Cygnet Bay Pearls showroom in Broome. Visit Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm for one of our pearl farm tours, a Sea Safari along the spectacular coastline or to buy pearls direct from the farm at our showroom. Our accommodation and licensed restaurant makes Cygnet Bay the perfect base for your trip to the Dampier Peninsula!

Thanks Yane! That drone photo is amazing and captures the contrast of Waterfall Reef and the water beautifully! Managed to get a few birds flying past which is one of the many highlights on this tour also.

Established in 1946 by founder Dean Brown, Cygnet Bay Pearls have been a part of Australia’s cultured Pearling industry from the industry’s inception. Visitors can gain an insight into the cultured pearling process, explore the wild and ancient Kimberley Coast, and for a truly unique experience, purchase a pearl right where it’s grown. 2016 marked their 70th year and to celebrate they opened their flagship pearl jewellery boutique on the Broome pearl strip, Dampier Terrace, to show case their range of classic and unique Cygnet Bay Pearl jewellery pieces. The program delivering cheap flights between Broome and Perth has been extended until 2020, with the State Government hailing it a success.

Under a deal with Qantas, the State Government offers flights of $199 (peak season) and $179 (off season) between Broome and Perth for specific weekend flights booked more than 60 days in advance.

Tourism Minister Paul Papalia says the flights had recieved a significant uptake.

"It's attractive for people to visit, it's also not a bad outcome for locals," Mr Papalia said yesterday.

"You can get these affordable flights, 500 extra seats a week coming into Broome, all through the year."

Under the deal, the Government provides Qantas and Broome Airport with support for landing fees and promotion, in return for the cheaper flights.

The Government has declined to reveal how much the deal costs taxpayers, citing commercial confidentiality.

While a similar trial was started in Exmouth last year, no plans have been put forward to deal with the situation in Kununurra and other remote centres, where residents continue to battle skyrocketing airfares.

The dry season is well and truly here, with our nights cooling off to the perfect temperature for our safari tents. Come 'glamping' with us and discover life on the remote Kimberley coast at our pearl farm, just north of Broome.

Our Chinatown Boutique offers live pearl harvests and grading classes! Drop in and see our fabulous team to learn all about the history and story of the Australian pearl in our pearling exhibition with a massive timeline and free pearling documentary.. not to mention our beautiful Australian South Sea Pearls!

What do you think about the sealing of the Cape Leveque Road?

With the road expected to be fully sealed by November 2020, visitor numbers are expected to increase by up to 41.35 per cent by 2030, according to a 2018 report by KPP Business Development.

The number of caravans, boats, trailers and heavy vehicles is set to increase, and more travellers are expected during the months of October, November, March, and April - extending the tourist season.

Pearls of Australia

A Central Coast operation is achieving international success in producing some of the best Akoya cultured pearls in the world.

Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Deputy Director General, Fisheries, Dr Geoff Allan, said Broken Bay Pearls is demonstrating the innovation of NSW aquaculture.

“This operation in the sheltered waters surrounding Broken Bay produces some of the best Akoya cultured pearls in the world, which are sold to retail outlets across the state, with the Akoya pearl in high demand globally,” Dr Allan said.

“Broken Bay Pearls is leading the world in terms of quality Akoya production and is leading Australia in terms of a relatively new industry.

“Pearl farms like this one are incredibly valuable to our $70 million aquaculture industry here in NSW.

“The company has developed a range of new techniques to adapt cultured pearl production to the NSW conditions and it is environmentally friendly.”
