APOD: 2020 September 7 - The Milky Way over St Michaels Mount
Where do land and sky converge? On every horizon -- but in this case the path on the ground leads to St Michael's Mount (Cornish: Karrek Loos yn Koos), a small historic island in Cornwall, England. The Mount is usually surrounded by shallow water, but at low tide is spanned by a human-constructed causeway. The path on the sky, actually the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy, also appears to lead to St Michael's Mount, but really lies far in the distance. The red nebula in the Milky Way, just above the castle, is the Lagoon Nebula, while bright Jupiter shines to the left, and a luminous meteor flashes to the right. The foreground and background images of this featured composite were taken on the same July night and from the same location. Although meteors are fleeting and the Milky Way disk shifts in the night as the Earth turns, Jupiter will remain prominent in the sunset sky into December.

St Ives Lifeboat
Today all of our volunteers should have been extremely busy getting ready for our biggest fundraising event of the year, Lifeboat day which would have normally been tomorrow. But this year is like no other, and with all of our fundraising activities cancelled for the entire year of 2020, we thought it would be nice to look back at some of the pictures and memories from previous Lifeboat days.
The crew always really enjoy lifeboat day, it's a wonderful way to share what we do as a station, share safety, meet the crew and see the boats, and of course it raises a significant amount of money for our station for the year.
So, if you would have normally been supporting us, maybe you may like to make a small donation online. All donations go directly to St Ives RNLI and as you know, we couldn't do any of what we do without the support from you.
Thanks to all of our brilliant supporters, our lifeboat crews in the UK aided an average of 26 people a day in 2018. Our lifeguards aided 32,207 people. With St Ives attending more shouts year on year, we want to thank everyone that always thinks of us.

Tate St Ives
Today’s Google Doodle honours Dame Barbara Hepworth, British pioneer of modernist art and sculpture, marking the date the artist arrived in St Ives.
On 25 August 1939, a week before the outbreak of war in Europe (on 3 September), Hepworth arrived in St Ives with her husband and children. They stayed at first with the painter Margaret Mellis and her husband the writer Adrian Stokes at Little Park Owles, Carbis Bay, before moving to a small house, Dunluce, nearby just after Christmas.
It was in St Ives that she established her studio and garden in Cornwall, where she lived and worked for the rest of her life.
Hepworth's studio stands in the garden: peer in and you can see the tools she loved to use, all her chisels, saws and hammers, as well as her white work apron and a set of unfinished works.
Located less than 5 minutes’ walk from Tate St Ives (you can buy a joint ticket) the beautiful gardens remain as she laid them out, with many spectacular bronzes left in the positions where the artist herself placed them.
