[01/28/13] Special Avalanche Bulletin – SAB Issued by the Bridger-Teton National Forest Avalanche Center at 8:45 AM on Monday January 28, 2013.
This special bulletin includes the areas of Teton, Lincoln and Sublette Counties in Wyoming covered by the Avalanche Hazard Bulletins issued by the Bridger-Teton National Forecast Avalanche Center for the Teton Area, Continental Divide/Togwotee Pass Area and the Southwest Trails Greys River Area….portions of NWS zones 12, 24 and 25.
Yesterday afternoon there were two separate avalanche fatalities in the mountains of Western, Wyoming. Both involved backcountry skiers who were caught and suffered fatal trauma in what are believed to have been small avalanches. Additional snowfall occurred overnight especially on the west slope of the Teton Range and the Continental Divide. Unstable conditions exist on steep slopes and even small slides have demonstrated the ability to kill. At this time Search and Rescue resources are focused on these two incidents and another involving an overdue group. Excellent terrain evaluation skills and a conservative approach to travel in avalanche terrain are necessary at this time.
