Cruises Etc

Cruises Etc shares our feelings......

The Crew at Cruises Etc wants to share our thoughts on the terrible tragedy of the Costa Concordia. As many of you know and can concur because you have sailed with us..... we have hosted many wonderful Super Cruises on Costa ships. We have always felt that they have welcomed us warmly and enthusiastically and have extended their trademark Italian hospitality. When the news broke about the accident we were winding down our Bon Voyage Party for this year's Super Cruise. We absorbed this information with shock, confusion and sympathy. We know so many wonderful people in the Costa family, both shore-side in Florida as well as on the ships. Our hearts ache for them. Inevitably, the questions arose: how did this happen? why did it happen? what's going to happen? etc etc.

First, we want to stress that this one-in-a-billion accident is so unique that it most certainly will never ever ever happen again. We know it wasn't the ship's fault. This terrible thing happened due to the actions of one person. The captain -- who is now in a heap of trouble. We won't get into speculating the ins and outs of the international and maritime legal machines but, suffice to say, this will be a long and complicated process.

Secondly, we want to reassure all of our cruisers and potential cruisers -- how safe and secure cruising is. Those who have experience know this firsthand. We know you understand how much the onboard staff prides themselves on putting your safety and security first. And perhaps, in light of this tragedy, it will bring even more awareness on behalf of both crew and passengers as pertains to overall safety.

Third, and on a more personal note, Joanne (me) is one of the few cruise agents in North America that had the experience of sailing on the Concordia. Due to our long history with Costa and the fact the our Super Cruise group bookings literally put Costa on the map here, they invited me to the Inaugural celebration & christening of the ship in Italy in July 2006. Because the ship had been continually based in Europe, not a whole lot of Americans (travel agents included) had the opportunity to sail on her. This was a fantastic experience and I met many key figures in the entire Carnival/Costa family and, along with other VIP agents, spent some memorable time in Genoa, Portofino and Rome. The evening Naming Ceremony was an extravaganza and I'll treasure it even more in the wake of this tragedy. Regardless of how many ships one sails on, when you have the experience of an Inaugural, you feel somewhat possessive of "your ship" and that's how I feel about the Concordia. I had something that not many others can claim. That's what makes this very sad story way more personal for me.

As many know, we don't only host our Annual Super Cruise.... we do all cruises, all over the world. We have been fortunate to host several Mediterranean Cruises, mainly on Carnival ships. We want to reiterate how confident you can feel about considering a Mediterranean Cruise. There's no better way to see so much of this part of the world than by cruise ship. We've already signed up over 50 people who will be sailing with us this September and will be happy to welcome more! In fact, if there has to be any silver lining after the Concordia accident, it may be that cruise lines will adjust pricing to encourage folks to make the commitment to sail. Our rates have already been favorably effected by this and those booked with us will see a price adjustment. The other reassurances we can give you about sailing on a Carnival ship (in this case, the brand new Breeze) is: English speaking throughout (no need for announcements in multiple languages as the majority of passengers are going to be English speaking. Also, unlike the European based cruise lines that have the ability to embark/debark passengers at every port, our ship will start and end at the same port, with all of the same passengers. This ensures that safety procedures & drills will be conducted as we're accustomed to -- the same afternoon that we board the ship. The comfort and familiarity to be found on a Carnival ship can not be underrated. It's a good feeling to be out and about visiting fascinating foreign ports of call and, at the end of the day, return to your home away from home. It's a very good feeling.

In closing, we want to again say how heavy our hearts are; and that we will continue to support and promote cruising as the BEST VACATION option out there. WE LOVE CRUISING AND SO SHOULD YOU !!!
