"Fontana Lake looked beautiful in pictures but we learned within minutes of arriving that pictures don’t do any justice! The water is clear and such a cool blue-green color. The entire lake felt very remote with very few homes and minimal boaters. A must do, in our opinion!" Gathering Twigs

Wait for it! Turn up the volume to listen to the bugle of the elk. It's officially elk rut (breeding season) which occurs late August to mid October. Male elk bugle as a challenge to other males and to woo females. This video by Heather Kemper was taken at the Mountain Farm Museum at the Cherokee entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Observers should get no closer than 50 yards and use binoculars, zoom in capabilities on your mobile device, or telephoto lens for closer views. The best time to catch them is just before dusk, and occasionally just after dawn.

Have you been to Soco Falls? This beautiful double waterfall is located on US19 about 11 miles east of Cherokee on the road to Maggie Valley. There’s a small pull-off on your right and a short walk leads you to an easy access observation deck. A path will get you to the bottom of the falls but it is only for the most experienced climber - it is a steep and slippery slope with ropes to hold on to as you go down and back up.

The Perseids meteor shower peaks next week, around the mornings of August 11, 12 and 13. Under ideal conditions, skywatchers can expect to see up to 100 meteors per hour — a much higher amount than most other showers. NASA considers it the best shower of the year. Find a place with a clear view of a large swath of the sky and also move far away from any sources of light. Recommended viewing spots in our area are Clingmans Dome, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and overlooks along the Blue Ridge Parkway, including Waterrock Knob. Have you ever done this on the Nantahala River? Most whitewater raft guides will make a stop at the "Jump Off Rock." If you are whitewater rafting, this rock is about 3/4 the way down the river and you can park your raft, climb and jump. Please be cautious when jumping, the rocks are slippery and the river is moving swiftly. Video by Endless River Adventures
